Buying a Left Hand Drive Car? New vs Pre-Owned

As well as being an exciting prospect, buying a car is obviously a big and important investment - it is something you need to get just right. Should you buy a new or pre-owned car? If you cannot decide what to go for, here are a few considerations to mull over.

Benefits of buying a new car

  • More sales benefits – a new car is likely to have more benefits at the point of sale, such as a better warranty. Some warranties are in excess of 3 years.

  • Reliability – with zero miles on the clock, a new car will have better reliability and performance. There will be fewer expensive unwarranted repairs.

  • Fuel economy – new cars have the best fuel economy, so the running costs are lower and the car is more eco-friendly.

  • Low maintenance - less need for major maintenance costs. New cars are not likely to need the tires, battery, brakes, or muffler replaced straight away. This is also a matter of convenience, as well as cost.

  • More fun!  The car will be built to your specification, will have the latest features/technology - not to mention that 'brand new car smell'.

Benefits of buying a pre-owned car

  • Initial cost – obviously the main benefit of buying a pre-owned car is that it is usually a better option financially.

  • Good quality pre-owned car – if you are buying a pre-owned car, it is possible to get a well-maintained model with a careful previous owner, which would mean not so much maintenance is required.

  • Lower depreciation - new cars lose about 40% of their value within 3 years, at which point the depreciation starts to slow down.

  • Insurance – pre-owned cars have lower insurance premiums.

  • Better version?   It might be that you can afford an even better version of the car you want, bearing in mind the savings made from buying a pre-owned car.

Of course the above points are fairly general, and as with everything there are exceptions to the rule. It is worth remembering that with all left-hand drive cars it is possible to get a better model for your money, so you'd already be off to a good start.
