Driverless cars

Self-drive cars made an appearance in the news again, giving us a peek into the future.

A coalition (dubbed the Self-Driving Coalition for Safer Streets) which includes the likes of Google, Ford, Volvo and Uber has been formed to quicken the reality of driverless cars. A spokesperson said, "Self-driving technology will enhance public safety and mobility for the elderly and disabled, reduce traffic congestion, improve environmental quality, and advance transportation efficiency."

Meanwhile, Ford claim to have overcome a major technological hurdle with the Ford Fusion now being able to drive in complete darkness, going one better than a car driven by a mere human. With 94% of fatal road accidents caused by human error, the move towards self-drive cars is being seen as a positive thing.

Diesel Pollution

Modern diesel cars were in the spotlight. According to Emissions Analytics (EA), 97% of them emit more toxic nitrogen oxide pollution on the road than the official limit.

It turned out that emission levels during normal driving conditions were significantly higher than when testing in the lab. Although since the current legislation relates to laboratory testing, only Volkswagen had actually broken the law - the other manufacturers having met the laboratory test standard. In another twist, the new data revealed that the small number of models not exceeding the levels were Volkswagens.

It was also revealed this month that Mitsubishi has rigged emissions testing since 1991.

Electric cars

Tesla once again proved to be at the forefront of EV innovation.

This month billionaire inventor Elon Musk unveiled the Tesla Model 3, introducing a more affordable electric car onto the market. This accessibility makes the reality of an age without fossil fuels even closer.

In addition to this there will soon be twice as many Tesla 'Supercharger' stations globally. Most charging stations would take over 30 hours to fully charge a car. Tesla's ultra fast chargers take less than half an hour.

The Tesla Model 3 will be shipped in 2017 and sales are already through the roof.
