UK Villagers rebel against parking costs
The usually quaint and peaceful village of Dedham, in Colchester, UK, is now the birthplace of a violent revolt. "Vigilante" action against new car parking charges has seen ram raiders flatten ticket machines in the area. A spokesperson for Colchester county council stated that machines, a notice board and a height barrier were all targets of a brutal assault, and have had to be taken away for repairs.
The violence is the latest development in an ongoing feud between council and car owner. Despite resistance from the community, parking charges were introduced by the council in April, and by July, the newly installed machines had been hit ten times by retaliatory superglue sabotage. Nick Barlow, a borough councillor, pleaded for an end to the madness, "These acts of vandalism are both defacing and damaging the image of the beautiful village of Dedham. This is a deliberate attempt to sabotage the council's efforts to carry out a legitimate policy."
Brian Hindley, retired police detective superintendent to the area, said the situation was "unprecedented."
